How to Show OBS Clips in NVIDIA Alt+Z / App Gallery
OBS Replay Buffer is great for in-game clipping without baking Discord or stream overlays into the file. The catch: those clips usually don’t show up in the NVIDIA Alt+Z gallery — even when you drop them in the right folder. This guide explains why, how to fix the save path, what metadata NVIDIA looks for, and how StreamProofed’s Testicle Bypass automates the last mile.
Why OBS clips don’t appear in Alt+Z by default
NVIDIA’s Alt+Z overlay (GeForce Experience or the newer NVIDIA App) builds its Gallery from clips it believes it created. Two things matter:
- Location — files living under NVIDIA’s clips / Videos path for that game or Desktop.
- Metadata — a Windows media property, EncodedBy, set to something NVIDIA recognizes (commonly
NVIDIA APP).
OBS writes perfectly fine MP4/MKV files, but it does not stamp that EncodedBy value. So even a clip sitting in Videos\NVIDIA can be invisible in Alt+Z until the gallery metadata is fixed.
Plain English: NVIDIA’s gallery isn’t just a folder browser. It filters for clips that look “native.” Testicle Bypass stamps the EncodedBy field (and sorts/renames into the NVIDIA clips location) so OBS files pass that filter — no game inject, no overlay tricks. Deep dive: what EncodedBy metadata does.
What you need
- Windows 10/11 with an NVIDIA GPU and Alt+Z working (GeForce Experience or NVIDIA App).
- OBS Studio with Replay Buffer (or regular Recording) enabled.
- Optional but recommended: Testicle Bypass v1.4 from StreamProofed so stamping + sorting is automatic.
Step-by-step: OBS clips → NVIDIA Alt+Z
- Find your NVIDIA clips folderOpen Alt+Z → Gallery or Settings and note where Instant Replay / Highlights save. Typical paths look like Videos\NVIDIA or a per-game subfolder under it. Copy that path.
- Point OBS at that folderOBS → Settings → Output → Recording (or Replay Buffer section). Set Recording Path to the NVIDIA clips folder you just found. Keep a format Alt+Z can play (MP4 or MKV is fine for most setups).
- Enable Replay BufferOBS → Settings → Output → Replay Buffer → Enable. Bind a hotkey under Settings → Hotkeys (“Save Replay”). Clip in-game without starting a full recording.
- Install Testicle BypassDownload, run the installer, paste your license key on first launch, and leave the tray icon running (it can start with Windows). Day $3.99 · Week $5.99 · Monthly $7.99 · Lifetime $29.99 via pricing.
- Save a test clipHit your OBS Replay Buffer hotkey. Testicle Bypass detects the new file, stamps EncodedBy for NVIDIA App, and places/sorts it for the gallery.
- Check Alt+ZPress Alt+Z → Gallery / Highlights. Your OBS clip should list alongside native NVIDIA Instant Replay clips.
Manual path-only approach (without the app)
Saving OBS into the NVIDIA folder helps with organization, but folder alone often isn’t enough for Gallery visibility. That’s why people who re-encode clips (e.g. HandBrake) sometimes lose gallery listing until EncodedBy is restored. Doing Shell property edits by hand is brittle across OS updates — Testicle Bypass exists so you don’t babysit metadata after every clip.
Troubleshooting
Clip file exists, but Alt+Z Gallery is empty
- Confirm the file is under the same root NVIDIA uses for Highlights.
- Confirm Testicle Bypass is running in the tray and has processed the file (re-save a fresh clip after launching the app).
- Confirm EncodedBy was stamped (Properties → Details on the file) — folder alone often isn’t enough.
- Restart the NVIDIA overlay (exit Alt+Z / NVIDIA App from the tray, reopen) so Gallery rescans.
- Check Discord overlays aren’t the issue — you clipped with OBS so overlays shouldn’t be baked in; Gallery emptiness is almost always path + metadata.
Wrong game bucket / Desktop instead of your game
NVIDIA sometimes sorts by detected process name. Sorting/renaming from Testicle Bypass keeps clips in predictable places; if a clip lands under Desktop, open the file from Gallery search or the Videos path and adjust OBS/game focus next time.
Replay Buffer hotkey does nothing
Enable Replay Buffer under Output, set a hotkey, and make sure OBS is running elevated only if the game is — hotkey focus issues are classic OBS, not NVIDIA.
What Testicle Bypass is (and isn’t)
Is: a Windows tray app by StreamProofed that watches OBS output, stamps EncodedBy metadata in plain terms NVIDIA’s gallery expects, and sorts clips into the NVIDIA clips location so they appear in Alt+Z.
Isn’t: a cheat, a game inject, a registry “streamproof” tweak, or anything that hides overlays from anti-cheat. It only works with clip files on disk.
