OBS vs NVIDIA Instant Replay (Keep Alt+Z)
NVIDIA Instant Replay is the easiest way to clip — one overlay, clips land in Alt+Z automatically. OBS Replay Buffer is the power-user choice for bitrate, codecs, scenes, and games where ShadowPlay/Instant Replay flakes out. You shouldn’t have to pick forever. Here’s an honest comparison and how StreamProofed lets you clip in OBS while still browsing in Alt+Z.
Quick comparison
| Factor | NVIDIA Instant Replay | OBS Replay Buffer |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience | Best — Alt+Z hotkey, Gallery built-in | Good once hotkeys + buffer are set |
| Gallery (Alt+Z) | Native | Not native — needs path + EncodedBy stamp (Testicle Bypass) |
| Quality / bitrate | Solid defaults; fewer knobs | Full control (CQ/CRF, bitrate, encoder, FPS) |
| Overlays in clip | Can include GeForce/Discord overlays depending on capture path | Clip from game/scene — keep chat widgets out of the file |
| FiveM / awkward titles | Often “supported game required” or unreliable | Widely used; more reliable capture path |
| CPU/GPU load | Usually light (NVENC) | Also NVENC-capable; depends on settings |
| Best for | Casual clipping, Gallery-first workflow | Creators, RP servers, quality freaks, overlay-free clips |
When NVIDIA Instant Replay wins
If Instant Replay works on your title and you’re happy with the look of Highlights, stay there. The Alt+Z gallery, trim tools, and sharing flow are genuinely convenient. StreamProofed does not try to replace the NVIDIA App — it only helps when you prefer OBS as the recorder.
When OBS Replay Buffer wins
- Quality control — pick NVENC settings, rate control, and resolution without fighting Instant Replay presets.
- Overlay-free clips — capture the game/scene so Discord, stream widgets, or desktop clutter aren’t baked into evidence or montages.
- Games Instant Replay won’t touch — FiveM and other titles often throw “supported game required” or refuse to buffer; OBS keeps clipping.
- Scenes & multi-source — facecam layouts later, but still clip clean gameplay takes from a dedicated scene.
ShadowPlay vs OBS clipping (same idea)
People still search “ShadowPlay vs OBS.” ShadowPlay/Instant Replay is NVIDIA’s brand for the overlay recorder; OBS is the open encoder stack. Same tradeoff as above: NVIDIA owns the gallery UX; OBS owns flexibility. The missing product category has been OBS files that still show up in Alt+Z — that’s the StreamProofed bridge.
The bridge: OBS record + Alt+Z browse
Workflow we recommend when you want both:
- Clip with OBS Replay Buffer (your quality + overlay rules).
- Save OBS output into (or let the app sort into) the NVIDIA clips folder.
- Let Testicle Bypass stamp EncodedBy metadata so Gallery lists the file.
- Review, trim, and share from Alt+Z like any Instant Replay clip.

Bitrate and “Instant Replay alternative” myths
OBS isn’t automatically “higher quality” — bad OBS settings can look worse than Instant Replay defaults. Treat OBS as an Instant Replay alternative when you need control or compatibility, then set NVENC sensibly (or copy a known-good preset). StreamProofed doesn’t change encode settings; it only handles gallery visibility after OBS writes the file.
What we don’t claim
- We don’t replace NVIDIA App or Instant Replay.
- We don’t “Medal-bash” — Medal is another clipper; some communities ban it for policy reasons (see the FiveM guide).
- We don’t inject games or hide overlays from anti-cheat. This is a file/metadata workflow.
