Restore NVIDIA Gallery After HandBrake

Updated October 7, 2026 · ~6 min read · HandBrake · EncodedBy · NVIDIA Gallery

Recompressed a clip with HandBrake and it vanished from NVIDIA Alt+Z Gallery — even though it’s still in the NVIDIA folder? Gallery filters on more than path. This guide explains the EncodedBy metadata angle, honest DIY restore options, and when StreamProofed’s Testicle Bypass helps for OBS-origin files.

Why Gallery drops recompressed clips

NVIDIA Alt+Z / App Gallery isn’t a plain folder view. It prefers clips that look native — typically under the NVIDIA Videos path and carrying gallery-friendly EncodedBy metadata. Instant Replay writes that for you. When you recompress with HandBrake (or similar), the encoder often strips or rewrites media properties. Result: the file still plays in Explorer/VLC, still sits in the “right” folder, but Gallery ignores it.

Same root cause as “OBS clips don’t show in Alt+Z”: missing EncodedBy. Deep dive: what EncodedBy metadata does.

Community pattern: Players who compress Instant Replay clips for upload size often report Gallery emptiness afterward — even when the file never left the NVIDIA folder. The fix people reach for is restoring the EncodedBy-style property NVIDIA expects (commonly values like NVIDIA APP).

DIY restore (honest)

  1. Confirm the file pathKeep the clip under the same NVIDIA Videos / Highlights root Alt+Z uses.
  2. Check Properties → DetailsRight-click → Properties → Details. Look for Encoded by / encoding fields. Compare to a native Instant Replay clip that still shows in Gallery.
  3. Restore EncodedBySome people use Windows Shell property editors or scripts to set EncodedBy back to a NVIDIA-recognized value. Exact tooling varies by Windows build and is easy to get wrong after updates.
  4. Rescan GalleryExit Alt+Z / NVIDIA App from the tray and reopen so Gallery rescans.

DIY is fine for a one-off restore. It’s brittle if you recompress often or if you’re generating fresh OBS clips every session.
